It’s the age-old dilemma: You need the experience to get a job, but how can you gain experience without a job? Fortunately, if you’re interested in a construction career, you have several pathways to gain that all-important first construction experience.
How to Find Construction Jobs
Rather than looking for construction jobs, try searching for general labor positions. The work won’t be glamorous, and it can be extremely physically taxing, but this is one of the best ways to learn construction from the ground up. And you may be able to get your foot in the door with a company that might later promote you.
Try a Construction Apprenticeship
Although not as popular as it once was, apprenticeship remains a viable path into many of the trades, including construction. As an apprentice, you’ll start out doing grunt work, like cleaning up job sites, and gradually work your way up as you learn different aspects of the business.
Enter Trade School
Trade school can be an excellent way to get started. You’ll learn the skills that are in demand, and most trade schools also help with job placement during and after you complete your program. This also allows you to earn various certificates that can make you more valuable to future employers.
Take an Internship
If you’re in college, look for an internship in the aspect of construction that most appeals to you. It may be unpaid, or you might earn a small stipend, but you can gain valuable experience that might not be available to you otherwise. This can set you up to be hired into a better position after you graduate.
Work with a Temp Agency
Temping can be an excellent way to gain experience in construction. If you’re like many people, you may not know exactly what specific job title is right for you. Temping allows you to try out many different parts of the construction industry without worrying about whether jumping around will damage your resume. In addition, many employers are willing to take a chance on a temp who lacks experience, because there’s no long-term commitment involved.
